Wouldn't you fill it up with water and then see if it leaks? If you have a coolant loss you might have to start the vehicle and check under the hood for possible leaks at the hose connections and also the radiator. You may also have a leak in the heating system. You can check that by turning on the heater and seeing if you smell the scent of antifreeze coming from the vents. Another sign of that would be possible coolant leaking onto the carpet on the passenger side. Please take precautions if you have the hood open with the engine running to not get your hand in the way of of the radiator fan......that's a good way to lose a finger or two.

Does a knocking sound indicate a cracked head on my 97 jeep grand Cherokee?

A cracked head could be the cause of the problem. This, along with a cracked head gasket would allow engine coolant to enter the oil supply. Coolant and oil do not mix well and over time, the oil looses its capability to lubricate. Check your oil for white spots and check your coolant reservoir for oil residue.

When adding engine coolant to an 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Low Coolant indicator has come on do you add only to the reserve tank or to the actual radiator as well?

When you add engine coolant to a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee because the low coolant indicator has come on, you should add to the reserve tank and the radiator if they are low. Sometimes, just the reserve tank needs filled.

Why does water bubble back in to expansion tank after engine stopped is this normal?

This is what the expansion tank is for. Liquid goes back and forth under pressure to stabilize the coolant capacity in the system. If it is not running hot then let it go.

Why would a message Coolant Sensor Bad still flash on the panel of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee after replacing the coolant level sensor?

There is one in the reservoir and one in the coolant tank. They probably replaced the one in the reservoir. My 96 is doing the same thing and the dealership replaced the one in the reservoir but the message is still coming up. I found out on another forum that it is the one in the tank that needs replaced. So I would check that out. Hope this helps. if its not the sensor, its the sensor plug.if that doesn't help it is the connection to the computer on the firewall.its in back of the coolant reservoir.ive never heard of the tank thing,no such thing also if there is air in your system, (air will enter from leaks in your system) when the air passes the sensor it throws out bad coolant sensor code, due to the rapid temp. change from that air bubble, if there is air in the system and not pumped out it can cause a blown head gasket, very expensive replacement

Can a cracked plastic tank at the top of a radiator be fixed or must you replace the radiator?

Replace the radiator. Try JB Weld or JB Kwik Weld on the crack first -- you can pick it up for $4 and it is definitely worth a shot. I have tried the jb weld it didn,t work . I had to buy a new raditor ANSWER I work in a shop where we routinely replace the plastic tank. If you have to repair the plastic tank then do it from the inside. You can separate the tank from the core by carefully loosening the aluminum tabs holding it in place.

Why is my cadillac steaming from the coolant recovery tank I replaced the water pump thermostat and coolant recovery tank cap and is still steaming first steam then water and it starts to overheat?

Either the cap is bad, your tank is either cracked at the seam or it has a pin hole that you can't see and the coolant is vaporizing ( steam ).

Why water boils in expansion tank?

There shouldn't be just water in the expansion tank. If the coolant (50% anti-freeze and water) appears to be boiling in the expansion tank, you may have a bad head gasket or cracked head.

You have had overheating problem with your car and quickly you filled the coolant tank with water and after you drive one mile your car overheated again and the the coolant dried up really quick?

If you can't see where its coming from, it may be a cracked head, or a bas headgasket. Also, when you add water to the coolant tank, it doesn't immediately go into the radiator. After the car sits a while, the radiator starts to cool, creating a vacuum. Water/coolant is then pulled into the radiator from the coolant tank.

Why is transmission fluid in the coolant in your 1994 Pontiac Grand Am?

The radiator has a transmission cooling tank in it. Evidently the tank has cracked. You may have a crack in your radiator your transmission cooling line runnz in your radiator good luck

Why is 91 Honda accord ex coolant radiator is cracked?

If the radiator is cracked then the vehicle has ran dry on coolant. This would cause the radiator to crack if there wasn't any coolant.

Your truck does not overheat but can I still have a cracked block?

Yes you can. A cracked block does not necessarily mean the car will overheat. If a block is cracked at a coolant jacket then coolant will leak out and the car will overheat if the leak is bad enough. If the leak is not very major or if the crack is at a point that does not have a coolant jacket then it will not overheat. A cracked block could leak oil, compressed air/fuel, coolant, or nothing at all and still be cracked. -R. Mesyef

Will your car overheat if you have a cracked head?

Yes! if you have a cracked head chances are your oil and coolant are mixing together and coolant and or oil is leaking out causing the vehicle to overheat... if you have a cracked head fix it! do not drive the vehicle

How can you tell if the engine block is cracked?

Visually on the outside. Internal cracks there will almost certainly be a mixing of the oil an coolant one way or the other.

Can a crackedhead make a car run hot?

Depending where it is cracked, yes. A cracked head can also simulate an overheated engine by pushing coolant out of the coolant reservoir.
