Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker, a Massachusetts Bay Puritan Minister. This probably occurred sometime between 1616 and 1647, when Hooker died. Hooker's exact date of birth does not seem to be known. Hooker was the second Puritan leader to leave the Massachusetts Colony after Roger Williams. Williams founded Rhode Island. Hooker, and his followers went on to the land area now known as Connecticut to establish a colony practicing their modified version of the Puritan theology, allowing for greater tolerance and greater freedom for the congregation than that practiced in Massachusetts.
