John Adams was a model of civic virtue from a very early age. He wanted to be a farmer, but his father insisted that he get an education. He was so stubborn in this desire that his father tested his mettle by giving him the most grueling days labor a boy could be put through. Even after this test John still wanted to be a farmer. Showing his tenacity even as a youth.

But when he became a lawyer he didn't doubt himself, he only doubted other peoples faith in him. When the Boston Massacre took place, he was the only lawyer in Boston that would represent the soldiers. When no-one else would, he showed his civic virtue by standing by the law, and standing by those who no other would stand by, regardless of what the rest of Massachusetts would have thought about him. When he won the trial on their behalf, he proved himself morally, and intellectually in the eyes of the people.

As you can see, even before he entered politics.. He was a model of civic virtue.
