The Cold War between the US and the USSR led to many foreign policies that later changed. The US supported right-wing, anti-communist regimes in many areas of the world, and competed for influence through economic and military aid. Examples are South Vietnam, Iran, and Cuba.

The concurrent arms race resulted in huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons by both sides. During the 1950s and 1960s, the American public was concerned, at least subconsciously, by the threat of nuclear war.

The second Red Scare (1947-1957) was due to renewed allegations of Soviet espionage within the US.

The Cold War was also a period of intense technological competition. Landing a man on the Moon in 1969 is one example of that technology. Another was the exponential development of computer systems beginning with ENIAC in 1946, and still continuing in Silicon Valley and other commercial ventures worldwide.

The closing of military bases, with the accompanying un-employment to the surrounding communities. The lost interest in space exploration. The role of the military has been modified to accept the functions of LAW ENFORCEMENT, now added to the role of National Defense.
