This depends how much you are eating to start with. If you are eating 5000 kcals a day, then yes eating less will help lose weight. If you are only eating 1700 kcals a day, then your body will go into starvation mode if you each much less than this. You have to eat enough calories each day to function. Look up Basal Metabolic Rate to work out what your minimum is and if you are exercising don't forget to add on your calories burned to make sure your body is still receiving enough to function.
