any one caught helping black people during slavery were jailed or killed by law. Not all white people were slave owners back then. MANY white people tried helping blacks escape. especially white girls, white girls are more kinder and giving then white males. so white women would occasionaly help a slave read, write and possibly escape. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above is true. Actually, only one Southern family in four owned slaves, mostly rich plantation owners. Before the war, Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson ran a school in violation of Virginia law to educate blacks and those of mixed black-white parentage.

It was what to teach a slave to read or write?

Teaching a slave to read or write was prohibited in many slaveholding societies as it was seen as a way to empower them and potentially lead to uprisings or challenges to the existing power structure. Education was used as a tool of control to maintain the system of slavery by keeping slaves illiterate and uninformed. Teachers or slaves caught educating others could face severe punishment or legal consequences.

Were children of slaves allowed to be educated?

No. It was against the law to teach a slave to read or write. What many people don't realize is that many of the slaves were all ready educated people in their own country and some had been military commanders as well. One of the things about slavery is that the person who owns slaves doesn't want a slave to be able to think and have critical skills to be able to fight the state of slavery.

What state provides the best account of why there was a high rate of illiteracy among slaves?

There wasn't a particular state but the laws that made it illegal to teach a slave to read or write. When a person can read they can read ideas and thoughts from people who discuss freedom and democracy. A educated slave makes a poor slave because they can think critically and teach others that slavery is wrong. This is why the Jim Crow laws used reading as one method to keep African Americans from voting, schools, and businesses.

Why don't they teach about Jewish involvement in slavery in schools?

Jewish involvement in slavery was typically as followers as opposed to leaders. Jews did not pioneer any new slave-making or slave-transporting mechanisms. This is not to say that Jews were not involved in slavery; in the US Civil War, as many Jews enlisted to defend the Confederacy as fought in the Union forces (roughly 10,000 on each). Jews in the US South defended African-American slavery using the same Hamitic references made by Christian Southerners such as Calhoun. However, when it comes to schools, there is typically only enough time to teach history in broad strokes. Since the Jews were a minority of slaveholders and slave-supporters, they are not mentioned. It's the same way that Jews who fought in the American Revolution are not mentioned. Jews are often not mentioned except when they have a strongly above-average contribution in a particular issue or event.

What type of education did Frederick Douglass have?

his owner did not teach him he was taught from his mistress who eventually turned on him because she was corrupted by slavery. he also used resources outside of the plantation (his father was white so he had more freedom then other slaves but he was still a slave) he'd challenge (trick) little kids to teach him how to spell words so he can write.
