Sucrose, Lactose, Maltose
Cane Sugar(sucrose),malt sugar(Maltose) are common disacharides in food.
breads, wheat, cereal, rice, tortillas, potatoes, and so on. (hint: anything at the bottom of the food pyramid is basically a carbohydrate.) ____________________________________________________________________ The above mentioned are not carbohydrates; they are foods containining carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are: glucose, sucrose, fructose, maltose, galactose, starch and many others.
Fructose: found in fruits and honey. Galactose: found in milk and dairy products. Glucose: found in honey, fruits and vegetables. Lactose: found in milk, made from glucose and galactose. Maltose: found in barley. Sucrose: made up of glucose and fructose and found in plants. Xylose: found in wood or straw.
A different between fructose and glucose is that fructose is much sweeter than glucose. Also fructose, when eaten and absorbed, releases its energy slower than glucose and can metabolize without the need of insulin.
Corn syrup is cheaper than cane sugar.
Invert Sugar is a mixture of equal parts of Glucose (Dextrose) & Fructose resulting from the hydrolysis of Sugar (Sucrose). It is found naturally in friuts & honey and produced artficially for use in the food industry.
An enzyme known as amylase. It reacts with sucrose to break it into glucose and fructose.
