A towards the engine. My tailpipe only fits on the B end since that was 1/2 smaller so I know this to be correct (1993 Jeep Cherokee)

no it cannot. the only thing that would happen is your engine would not get new oxygen into it's cylinders, because the muffler wasn't breathing well enough, and your engine would just shut off.
It does not hurt an engine to run it with no exhaust muffler
Also known as a "crate engine" a turnkey is a complete replacement. The engine is taken out of the shipping crate assembled and ready to be installed.

It really depends on what it needs. Is it just a muffler? An Intermediate Pipe? Front Engine pipe? Converter? If it only needs a muffler... $200. If it needs a muffler and Intermediate pipe...$400. Best to have it looked at to be sure. PaulMidas of Dartmouth

the resonator is a separate part of the exhaust system not part of the muffler it is to change the tone of an engine sound some are mounted before the muffler and some after the muffler if you really want to remove it cut it off with a sawsall or chain cutter and weld in a piece of pipe or look at a aftermarket exhaust catalog many replacement pipes omit resonator's.
basically, a muffler is used to reduce the sound that the engine produces:)
Answer It could be that you need a new muffler. After so long the baffling inside the muffler can burn out. Also make sure that the muffler is not cracked or that exhaust is not leaking before it gets into the muffler. At the gasket between the muffler and the engine. Hope ths helps.
