Many people don't think of Buddhism as a religion at all, but more of a philosophy or way of life. Buddhism has no central dogma of faith (a canon or collection of writing or knowledge that outlines what an adherent to a religion must believe), and it doesn't require that adherents worship anything, so it is unlike most religions. It is like a religion insofar as it deals with issues of spirituality, the afterlife and cosmology, but it approaches those issues much in the way a scientist approaches understanding the universe. Buddhism encourages people to think deeply about what it means to be alive in this world, and to treat each other with great compassion, and those two things, I think, make Buddhism "good."
Although this is purely opinion, based on the history of other religions, Buddhism seems to be greater in comparison. if you look at the wars and social upheavals caused by Buddhism and another religion (Islam or Christianity for example) they cannot compare. This is to say Buddhism is more peaceful and "down to earth" than others. Also, conversion by force or greed is non-existent in Buddhism. Yet these people have still been persecuted through history. The Buddhist philosophy spread from India by missionaries, though India itself was fixed on Hinduism at the time, it caught on in Sri Lanka, Nepal, China, Mongolia, and southern Asia countries. It was isolated from the western world until immigrants brought the belief to America in the 19th century. Now, Buddhism is the philosophy of over 400 million people across the world.
The best thing I found about Buddhism is that it gives me the freedom to question. It has taught me to think for myself, to grow freely and to learn through all of lifes experiences. When I am in a situation (like a job) that I don't like, even though I know I probably won't be there very long, I stay long enough to recognize the lessons it has to teach me and learn from them. Rather than feeling sorry for myself, I open my eyes to see the reason I am there. Before I began practicing Buddhism, I would have went to that job dreading each moment and counting the minutes before I could leave. Now, I watch, I listen, I allow myself to seek what it is I hate about the situation. Sometimes I have found that the very thing I hated is the thing that taught me the most about myself. Another wonderful thing about Buddhism is how it shows you that you are not one small being in a large Universe, you are a part of that large Universe. Jeanne
There are no absolute criteria for a "proper" religion, although many rgroups critique other religions by the criteria "If it isn't ours, it's not right". Buddhism is as proper as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Pastafarianism, Rastafarianism, Wicca, Zeus worship or any of he other hundreds of religions and sects in existence.
Note:
Like all questions regarding the "best" the answer depends on the individuals point of view. Comments offered include:
Yes, Buddhism is the best religion. Because
1. there are no religious battles in Buddhist.
2. there is no organization others.
3. it is practically and systematically.
4. it can be detected by scientific ways..
5. it is very agreement with law of conservation of energy and mass.
6. it can explain the clone method by Buddha's method.
7. it gives " good deed bears good result and bad deed bears bad result'' by the law of Kamma.
8. It can explain the existence of human beings and how the world begin.
9. it's major work is to kill anger, greedy, ignorance and attachment.
10. it's final goal is to get real peace and freedom from the different ways of sufferings.
Ultimately, it depends. But to give the short answer, I would say more so than not. Buddhism basically starts off being pretty good. It's well structured, has plenty of insightful precepts, and is straight to the point.
There is no hesitation in the claims, nor any indication of uncertainty."This is the way it is, that is not the way it is," is basically the theme, with little wiggle room. While most see this as arrogant, it could come off as a solid, confident authority as well.
So far, sounds pretty good. However, Buddhism has two fundamental flaws. Firstly, it promotes escapism. Secondly, it speaks at length about reincarnation, as if it is a common sense, universally accepted phenomenon. I could talk at length about it, but who is still reading?
Buddhism is neither good or bad. It is simply one of mankind's attempts to find answers to problems which face us all. Basically Buddha came upon the truth that all humans live lives that are not totally satisfying and that this unsatisfactory nature causes pain or suffering. He postulated that this resulted from the human desire to make things better by striving for more material and social advantage. He suggested that the suffering would end if the unreasonable search for "better" ended. The Eightfold Path suggested things to incrporate into one's life to achieve this end.The religious folks of the Abrahamic tradition find his lack of reliance on a deity to get mankind to this state either by revelation or direct control abhorrent. Buddha had suggested that mankind's own internal resources of reason and purpose were enough.
Based on this Abrahamic faiths see Buddhism as "bad" or more accurately "not like us, so it's bad". In reality it is simply different.
There is no Religionometer to measure the "goodness" of any religion. Christianity, Buddhism, Pastafarianism and Satanism are all equal. The only consideration is whether the religion or philosophy meets your individual needs.
It's good as it belives in peace and life without suffering.
Define "good".
