No, Japan is not a continent. It is an archipelago or island chain off the east coast of the continent of Asia, in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of 4 larger islands and as many as 6000 smaller ones in a long arc between Sakhalin Island (Russia) and Taiwan far to the southwest.

It depends.

Japan is NOT part of Asia according to some Japanese. Japan is separated from Asian continent by water, and some Japanese believe it's not part of Asia.

If they say something like: "We are building new factories in Asia", the phrase would explicitly mean "We are building new factories in Asia, but outside of Japan".

Asian is translated to ajia-jin in Japanese, but when they say ajia-jin, it usually excludes Japanese. It's somewhat analogous to the fact that some people believe UK is not part of Europe.

In the Western literature, Japan is almost always part of Asia.

Japan is usually considered part of Asia even though it's not part of the Asian mainland.
