Mecca is the center of the Islamic world. Because Islam is such a large, and often misunderstood religion, it is quite important to the rest of the world as well. I'm not sure that any place is entitled to be called "The Center of the World". Rome is the center of the Christian world, New York is the center of the financial world (one of them anyway) and so on. Does that make them more important than all the rest? I think not.
