Puerto Rico is not a state in the Union that is the United States of America.

Puerto Rico is a an organized territory of the United States, and operates as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in free association with the United States.

Puerto Rico has local autonomy but the US has the final say in defense and certain finances, and Federal Laws and statutes apply. Although Puerto Rican's are US citizens, they do not pay federal income tax. But Puerto Ricans are subject to the Selective Service (draft), the laws of the US, and the US Constitution.

Puerto Rico is in America in the sense of being an island associated with the American Continents. It is in the Caribbean Sea, so not strictly North America or South America.

Puerto Rico is also "in" America if by America you mean the United States of America. It is an organized territory of the United States and people born in Puerto Rico are automatically citizens of the United States.

No. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States (a territory).

The United States does not have provinces. The United States has 50 States, and 5 major territories each with a different status. Puerto Rico is a Free Associated Commonwealth (territory) of the United States of America. Puerto Rico has similar autonomy to the 50 US States but it does not have real voting representation in Congress and residents of Puerto Rico cannot vote for President.

The US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands are the other 4 (inhabited) territories of the United States.

While Puerto Rico is part of the United States of America, it is a territory, not a state. It is an island in the Caribbean Sea and so not strictly in North American at all.
