yep bad pump did you check the oil. check it for antifreeze if you have water in the oil you may have a blown head gasket.
If you live up north it could also be a freeze plug popped out. Probably the water pump though. When you change it out I would also replace both the lower and upper radiator hoses and the thermostat (and gasket).
full coolant system is about 12liters dry.
Why would the temperature gauge indicate an overheated condition when the engine is not hot. It could be the gauge in the instrument panel. Unlikey however. More likely it is a bad coolant temperature sensor or the wiring from the sensor back to the instrument panel. Inspect the wiring and replace the coolant sensor. The sensor is not too expensive.
