No it is not an auto immune disease. It can be congenital due to poorly developed lymphatics, or it can be due to blocked or damaged lymphatics.
One of the most common causes in India and Africa is Filariasis which causes blocked lymphatics, and can be treated with medication. It can also be seen in pelvic tumours, when the swelling causes pressure on the vessels and lymphatics.
It is seen most commonly now after radical surgery when the lymph nodes are removed for malignant disease.
