Following assent from Queen Elizabeth II, same-sex marriage will be legal in England and Wales on March 29, 2014. Until then, same-sex couples may obtain the same rights and responsibilities as legal marriage by entering into a civil partnership.

Both performance and recognition of a marriage between parties of the same gender is explicitly prohibited in the remainder of the United Kingdom by:

  1. The 1977 Marriage Act (Scotland).
  2. The 2003 Marriage Order (Northern Ireland).

However, the 2004 Civil Partnership Act (which came into effect in December 2005) provides exactly the same rights and benefits of marriage to same-sex couples, except for use of the word "marriage." Same-sex marriages performed in countries outside the UK are recognized inside the UK as "Civil Partnerships."
Actual Gay marriage was legalised in March of 2014 for England & Wales, and will become legal in Scotland in Autumn, 2014.

(In 2005, gay couples were awarded the same legal rights as heterosexual partners in the form of Civil Partnerships.)

Yes. Following assent from Queen Elizabeth II, same-sex marriage will be legal in England and Wales on March 29, 2013. Until then, same-sex couples may obtain the same rights and responsibilities as legal marriage by entering into a civil partnership.

A similar law takes effect in Scotland on December 16, 2014, with the first same-sex marriages scheduled for December 31, 2014.

Previously, the 2004 Civil Partnership Act (which came into effect in December 2005) provided exactly the same rights and benefits of marriage to same-sex couples, except for use of the word "marriage." Same-sex marriages performed in countries outside the UK were recognized inside the UK as "Civil Partnerships."
