Atlas was one of the Titans in Greek Mythology.

Now, the word "atlas" is used to mean a book of maps.

Another person

Atlas is the Titan who holds up the sky.

He helped his brother Chronus (yes, he is Chronus's brother) try to win the war against Zeus. Though, he and Chronus lost the war, so Chronus was cut into exactly 1,000,000 pieces, and thrown into Tartarus, while Atlas gets the punishment of holding up the sky.

Yes it does. Atlas was one of the Titans. he was the son of Iapetus and Asia, and as such, the brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus. However, unlike his brothers, during the Titanomachy, he sided with the Titans and was punished for it. His duty was to hold the heavens in place.

Over time, the image became corrupted and the heavens were replaced with the earth, thus why we call maps atlases.

We also take the name of the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlas Mountains and Atlantis from him.

Atlas is from Greek mythology. He is, as the Greeks believed, the one who holds up the sky and keeps it from falling to Earth and crushing everything.
