No federal law requires employers to offer anyone med insurance - current OR former employees. Certainly no law requires the employer to pay the premium.

Rely on Yourself for Your Health?

No longer can an employee rely on a business to provide proper health benefits for his (her) needs, or those of his (her) family. Employees would do well to search out their own health plans, and if their employer offers one with their employment package, consider it a bonus. Gap insurance is the most important type of plan to consider when employed by a business with a health benefit. Every six months, an employee should check the benefits of the employer sponsored plan and change the gap insurance in order to fill in the holes left by the employer sponsored plan. The gap insurance would be best to be a PPO, as they provide much more freedom than do HMO plans.

Is an employer responsible for continuing health insurance coverage if an employee is out on workers compensation claim?

I don't know anything in the Code that requires it. The EmployER application for Group Medical Coverage asks if an Employer would like to allow an employee to keep coverage for up to 6 months. What if the Employer is only paying a portion of the premium? The Employee would still have to pay his portion. For a copy of the Blue Cross employer application Question # 10 http://www.quotit.net/eproIFP/webpages/applications/applications_group.asp?license_no=0596610 There is always COBRA

Where can you get a copy of your Explanation of Benefits?

Explanation of Benefits (EOB) is a form or document that may be sent to you by your insurance company several months after you had a healthcare service that was paid by the insurance company. You should get an EOB if you have private health insurance, a health plan from your employer, or Medicare.

Yes. I used to do this when I was seasonally employed. Be aware that your employer will end up paying a higher rate towards unemployment insurance.

In the Economic slowdown i lost my job my new employer does not provide group health insurance to its employees Any help as how you should buy health insurance privately?

Well, as you mentioned that your new employer does not offer you group health insurance, it seems you had the policy with your earlier employer. One option is that you can continue the same policy for 18 months through COBRA; or pick up some online platforms that will give you a fair idea of plans available to you. One of my friends faced the same trouble. He tried hCentive.com and quickly landed on a good plan.

How long does employer has to keep insurance on you when out on disability?

Your employer does not. Under a federal act known as COBRA (1985), you are entitled to continue your coverage through your employer's health insurance company at the full rate (your premium plus whatever your employer paid) or you may elect a lesser coverage plan under the same health provider, for up to 18 months (in most cases). While there is an additional act known as ARRA (2009) in which the government provides some eligible individuals with up to 65% of their health insurance through COBRA, the ex-employee is fully responsible for the full cost of the insurance - the employer has no responsibility to pay.

Why can't i stay on my employers health insurance when i turn 65?

It depends where you live. Some employers do not provide insurance. In some countries if you are working after you are 65 or your spouse is working, you will be entitled for health insurance from employer. You will be eligible for Medicare even if you continue to work after you turn 65. It is important that you decide whether or not to enroll for medicare. You may not need all of Medicare benefits if you are still covered under your employer's plan. You can delay certain parts of Medicare, and get them later on when you retire, or if you lose your employer's insurance. You should make these decisions at least 3 months before your 65th birthday.
