If only the surface bark is stripped, it will heal itself. If the damage is into the first layer of wood youmay need to bandage it similar to a human wound. Wrap the area with a cloth and tape it up. (I use cheap Duct Tape so the sun destroys it in about a year) For sensitive plants (roses for example) you may want to soak the cloth in wax to make a nice seal around the wound. Even if the bark is damaged all the way around the branch, it will still heal in time. If the first layer of wood is removed all the way around for more than an inch or so the branch is better removed.
it will diebecause it carries food in the bark
I have no knowledge of porcupines but the tree should continue to grow below the damage.
For example: My dog loves to bark at the mailman. The rabbits had stripped the bark from all around the base of the new tree. The canoe was made of birch bark and pine pitch. His bark was worse than his bite.
The bark serves as the only protection between the elements and the tree's Cambrian layer. The Cambrian layer is the tree's version of our own blood vessels; it carries the nutrients from the roots to the rest of the tree. With no bark, the layer can freeze, be ripped, or most commonly, dry out.
Cork is the bark of a quercus suber, or cork oak. A tree grows for approx. 25 years then is stripped of its bark from lower parts of the tree. It re-grows and is stripped every 9 years until 250 years old or more. It is used for wine corks, flooring, gaskets, coasters, construction, etc. Check out corkfacts.com.
If a fig tree's bark has been ate off by mice then it will not beable to survive because it has nothing to survive off of.
Three tree left dog bark orange monkey.
Every two years the trees are cut to just above ground level. The bark is harvested from the new shoots, then dried. The outer bark is stripped away, leaving the inner bark, which is the main medicinal part.
To debark a tree means that the bark has been peeled off a tree.
If a layer of bark is removed with the inner cambium layer from the entire circumference of a tree, the tree will die. If the xylem or phloem of the tree is interrupted, food and water cannot travel through the tree from the roots up. The inner core of a tree, or heartwood, is actually dead tissue and does not transport anything.

I just recently learned too that if the wound is deep and bleeding (sap coming out) you can use spray paint on the wound. It is similar to humans using super glue as a band aid and will eventually fade or be overgrown with new bark. Insects and animals also avoid the area. Try using repellent to rid yourself of the squirrels, avoid any animal urine, those have not been garanteed to work. Using chicken fence around the base of the tree can also help the tree.
Because it hasn't been smoothed by chemical weathering since it is wood and it just is. Some tree bark is quite smooth for no reason whatsoever.
