There are two.....one for the computer and one for the gauge or light. The one for the computer is mounted just below the thermostat housing on the rear. The one for the gauge is mounted on the rear cylinder head on the driver side.

In answer to your question the coolant temperature sensor on a 2000 Pontiac grand am with a 3.4L engine, is located on the rear of the engine above the flywheel. It is located just behind the what I believe is the alternator.
