Not sure what you mean "bad".
The timing belt tends to be OK or totally stuffed (stripped, broken). As the Rav4 runs an interference motor, if the belt lets go the pistons hit the valves & destroy the motor. If your timing belt has let go the motor will either turn over really quick due to no compression or not at all due to being seized (pistons jamming on valves).
The timing belt never gives any warning or sign of imminent failure - one moment it's fine, the next - disaster..
You need to replace it every 100000km or so to avoid this...
