Absolutley not! no Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." I rather like his advice. If someone wants to come here, do it legally and become an American. No more referring to people as "African American" or "Mexican American," just "American" will do. Yes. If it were not for Immigration the only inhabitants in American would be Native Americans (which would not necessarily be a bad thing). Immigrants are no more unruly, immoral, dishonest, and so forth than are many natural born citizens. What is needed is immigration reform and better enforcement of those laws that exist and those that may be implemented in the future. The government has already made a good start by arresting employers who hire illegal immigrants. If there were not American employers hiring illegal immigrants at less than minimum wage much of the illegal immigration problems would be eliminated. === === === === === === LEGAL IMMIGRATION, yes. Continued allowing of hundreds of thousands of ILLEGAL ALIENS to FLOOD across the borders, ABSOLUTELY NOT! And even regarding legal immigration, US corporations and business should not be allowed to use illegal aliens to reduce the already over taxed job market for personal gain and the exclusion of citizens [both natural, AND legal immigrants]. In the high technology fields, corporations, like Microsoft as only one example, import a half dozen software engineers from India for the same salary [around 30 to 40 thousand a year] as they would have to pay an equivalently qualified US engineer. And "they" wonder out loud why enrollment of US students in engineering programs is dwindling. Hell, why should a kid spend 4 or 5 years in college getting an engineering degree when the salary is going to be little more than s/he could make as a "manager" at one of our fast food franchises? And more in other fields of endeavour. Yes, we should have very moderate LEGAL immigration, BUT NOT AT THE increasing rates we've seen over the last 40 to 50 years. For example, EVERYONE wants to go to America. But IF we ALLOWED ALL who wanted to access the "American Dream," billions would flood in, and very quickly there would not even be room to lie down [literally]. The infrastructure/logistics for providing even the basic necessities of life would quickly become impossible. Living conditions would be several orders of magnitude worse than currently exists in the most overpopulated nations today. Due to decades of ever more permissive US immigration control policies, the masses of legal immigrants [and larger numbers of ILLEGAL ALIENS] have ALREADY SERIOUSLY IMPACTED our infrastructure. Some examples include middle income flight to suburban and rural areas, leaving the cities to become ghettos for the illegal aliens and the poor citizens displaced by the illegal alien workers; the inability of our street, highway and transportation systems to keep up with urban sprawl; most hospital EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS turning into nonemergency "health clinics" for the financial subclass [illegal aliens, legal immigrants, job displaced citizen poor] without any medical insurance; similar "overload" on all other social services, including even the "faith based" system, which are challenged beyond capacity, failing tax bases for school systems unable to keep up with the ever increasing [at asymptotic rates] numbers of students, and so many Hispanic students for whom "BILINGUAL EDUCATION" was initially intended to assist their assimilation into an existing predominately English speaking nation, now being fully taught in Spanish, with NO probability of learning English or ever being assimilated into the English speaking American "melting pot." If one listens to many of the Hispanic rights speakers, they actually are advocating so flooding the United States with Hispanics that they will "take control" of the nation, and will "run it their way," including making Spanish the legal first language. If you doubt this, check out several of the Hispanic websites. Over the last 50 years, millions of foreign workers [legal immigrants and ILLEGAL ALIENS] Have so flooded the low paid, "unskilled" job market that supply and demand principles have driven most US citizen workers out. To the illegal alien Mexican worker, the below American minimum wage is a fortune in Mexico. He is happy to send his money home, be constantly pushed and abused by his employer in simi slave-like conditions. Even minimally educated US citizens will not work under such conditions--it's not that "they" don't want to work, it's that they will not tolerate employer abuse. I, many times, have personally observed as many as 10 to 20 illegal Mexican laborers breaking the law by living in one single two bedroom, one bath apartment to save on expenses to allow more money to be sent home. This practice is in violation of housing codes in most cities, but most landlords [like most employers could care less as long as they get their money. Not only that, he's is PROBABLY "hosing the illegal alien tenants down" with exorbitantly high rent, knowing that they CANNOT COMPLAIN to anyone in government that could help them. The list of degradations, both for legal immigrants and ILLEGAL ALIENS, goes ON and ON; there is not room here to expose it all. The above only scratches the surface regarding the NEGATIVE IMPACT that OUT OF CONTROL IMMIGRATION, legal and illegal has upon EVERYONE in this country. Yes, immigration into the US should be allowed, BUT it should be in REASONABLE NUMBERS which will ALLOW for FULL ASSIMILATION, which is good for both the legal immigrants AND the people already here, including indigenous natives, longtime [many generations] of legal immigrants, and even NEW legal immigrants. Sorry about the length of this discussion, but the problem[s] is/are not simple, and simple answers [preceding] cannot and do not adequately address this issue. YES THEY SHOULD!!!
