Dalmatians and Australian Cattle Dogs are both born white, with only larger solid markings visible at birth. They also continue to "grow" new spots throughout their lifetime, so the same dog can look very different in coloration after several years.

Source~ I'm the proud owner of a Texas Heeler, which is 1/2 Cattle Dog. Every so often we'll notice she has a few new red spots; this is especially apparent when looking at photographs of her throughout the years. =)
