I think it has partially to do with the fact that he is half African American, but also because he is a good speaker, according to the people of the United States. The people of the United States like him, rather like they liked President Roosevelt, who was also a popular president. It may also have something to do with the fact that President Bush had such a low approval rating, and very few agreed with him on the economy, the War on Terror, and the Iraq War. I think the people of the United States felt like it was a relief to finally have a president who agrees with them.
