Power loss can be: Engine needs a tune up Check the oil level, if empty that is bad news. Clogged fuel filter Failed in tank fuel pump (if fitted) failed external fuel pump (under car passenger side rear) If engine is hot at the time of loss suspect the ignition coil, ignition coils can start out fine but heat up and short internally. cracked or split intake air plenum between the mixture control unit and the throttle body. The 1993 VW thermostat can be found on the front of the engine. You can follow the top radiator hose directly to the thermostat housing.
Do you have a hot start kit installed? Perhaps it is the relay switch?. Have had the same problem with both an 87 and 88 Cabriolet. Not sure if that will help but you never know! Larissa
