Originally four (4). One each for WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, laid to rest in the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington, VA near Washington, DC. In 1998, the remains of the Vietnam War unknown was identified (through DNA), as USAF LT Michael Blassie, shot down near An Loc in 1972. He was reinterred in a family plot; the crypt of the Vietnam Unknown remains empty to this day. So now there are only three (3).

There are even Unknowns from the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and Vietnam, that were not recipients of the Medal of Honor and lay in Arlington National Cemetery.
