Answer
The Italian government formally surrendered on 8 Sept 1943, the day before the Allies landed at Salerno.
Italy did not exactly switch sides. Churchill did not want to allow the Italians to become an ally. The only option was for them to surrender as a defeated enemy.
However, on the local scale, many Italian ex-soldiers and citizens supported the Allies and worked for the local Allied commanders. They performed duties as translators, guides, and carrying supplies up into the mountains.
because they realised that they didn't want to follow Mussolini (dictator in Italy) and US invaded tem. This was their chance to switch sides.
Italy decarlared war against the Germans on the 13th of October 1943. For more info go to the site listed below or go to Google and type in Why did Italy change sides in world war 2 and scroll and click on HISTORY OF WW2 ans scroll down until the sub-title ITLAY CHANGES SIDES.

Cool Answer When the Allies landed on Italy they saw the futility of their position.

Answer

In WW2, the Italian government did NOT switch sides. Some of the leaders and businessmen of Italy and the citizens wanted to switch sides. But Churchill and England did not want the Allies to allow the Italians to join their alliance. Instead they demanded that the Italians surrender. This is why there was a long delay between the time Benito Mussolini step down in August 1943 and the announcement of their surrender on 8 September 1943, the day before the landings at Salerno.

The Italian government surrendered and their soldiers were disarmed. Of course, the German army occupied much of Italy and disarmed the Italians so they would not fight them. Italian civilians and ex-soldiers were allowed to be employed as interpreters, guides and carry supplies. It wasn't until a year later before some Italians were armed and trained so they could fight with the Allies. But this was only 5 combat groups (or battalion size).

Italy joined the war mainly because it was allied with Germany.

At first, Benito Mussolini (Italy's dictator) actually strongly opposed Adolf Hitler (Germany's dictator), and almost went to war against him in 1935 after some Nazis had murdered the dictator ruling Austria, who Mussolini had strongly supported. But Hitler admired Mussolini, and had always had plans to try to ally with him. Both countries wanted to conquer other countries- when Italy invaded and conquered Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia), Germany was pretty much the only country that supported it, which began to change Mussolini's mind about Hitler.

Once it became clear that they shared goals, and Hitler made promises not to try to take Italian territory, Italy joined Germany's side- although Italy did not join the war immediately. When Germany invaded France in May 1940, Italy finally declared war on Britain and France in early June, after Germany had almost fully defeated France (Mussolini famously quipped that he just needed a few thousand dead soldiers so that he could have a seat at the negotiation table).

Germany and Italy would formalize their alliance, along with Japan, in September 1940 with the "Tripartite Pact".

Did Italy change sides in World War II?

* Because Italy realized that the Central Powers (the side that they originally were on) were losing, and Italy, not heavily invested in the causes behind the war, wished to gain the port city of Fiume, which was currently owned by Austria-Hungary. When it was evident that they would not receive Fiume by staying with the Central Powers, Italy joined forces with the Allies, who agreed that Italy could have Fiume, if she could capture it.
