Due to his death by assassination on April 15, 1865 (he had been shot on the 14th by John Wilkes Booth), Andrew Johnson was sworn in as President on April 15.
The last major Confederate force under General Johnston, surrendered to US General Sherman on April 26, 1865. The absolute last surrender took place on May 26, 1865 under the small Confederate force of Kirby.
