Army Special Forces were in Iraq well before the ground offensive began, and the CIA probably was, as well. The ground offensive involved the Army, Marines, and even ground units of the Navy and Air Force (as well as the armed forces of the Great Britain, Australia, and other supporting countries), which occurred simultaneously, although I do believe the first unit to actually cross the border into Iraq was an Army unit. However, the first actual offensive actions in Iraqi territory occurred just before the ground offensive was initiated, when Air Force planes dropped ordinance on the site where Saddam Hussein was believed to be in hiding.

Was the US Army first to inter Iraq or was the US Marines first to inter Iraq?

The Army had units in Iraq first. US Army Special Forces were in Iraq before the war even began. As for the ground offensive, it was a simultaneous push - the border was crossed at several points simultaneously by both Army and Marine personnel, although I believe the first line unit fully across the border into Iraq was an Army unit. The first actual strike of the war, however, was dealt by the Air Force.

Why do marines go first during war?

When have they, exactly? Special operations units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and CIA were in Iraq well before the ground invasion started, and the initial push into Iraq involved all branches simultaneously. The Rangers went into Afghanistan when the Marines did. The 82nd Airborne Division of the Army are where the first troops to respond to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait came from. Panama was mostly an Army affair, Grenada involved Navy SEALs and Army Rangers who went in-country before the Marines did, the first advisors to the South Vietnamese were from the Army. The Marine battalions were sent in initially to guard airfields to protect them from attacks by the Viet Cong, but the first major combat action in Vietnam was undertaken by the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. So I suppose that your question would have to be based on fact before it could be legitimately answered. LOL the army had to send its best with the everyday marines ^^^^ lol all i see is marines and the best of the rest of the branches... lol not gonna say anything about the marines best huh. LOL ^ The marines best? lolwut? Marines are constantly being bailed out by the Army, not only that, i hope your not talking about marine recon? The are the same as a regular grunt except they are light armour.

How many marines are currently in Iraq?

According to recent articles, U.S. Marines have withdrawn from Iraq completely as of early 2010. The Marines handed over control over to the U.S. Army at that time, which began an accelerated decline of American troops and involvement in Iraq.

Why are US military and marines in Iraq?

Marines are in Iraq for more than one reason. 1 reason they could be in Iraq because of the date "9/11." Another is because back in 1989 the Iraqis claimed 1 type land to be theirs. It looks like that could be another reason. Thanks, you're Local Nerd, Wes.

How many us soldiers fought in the Iraq Afghanistan war?

As of 31 Dec 2011, an estimated 2.5 million Army-Navy-Air Force-Marines have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Actual numbers are elusive with so many Marines and soldiers having served multiple deployments. The Army supplied 54% of the troop strength, with the Navy 17%, the Air Farce 16%, and the Marines 14%; however it must be noted the Army's troop strength of 1.5 million (active duty-National Guard-Reserves) far exceeds the Marine Corps 200,000.

Why are Marines first to enter a war?

Are they? I don't recall them being the first into WWI. Army units were the first to fend off the Japanese in the Pacific during WWII. The first American units to form the Pusan Perimeter during the Korean War were Army units. US Army advisors were in Vietnam since 1954 - well before the first two battalions of Marines were deployed to protect airfields - and the first offensive action by US units in Vietnam was carried out by the Army's 1st Cavalry Division. Grenada was done concurrently by the Marines with Army Rangers and Navy SEALS. Panama was mostly an Army affair, relying on rapidly deployable paratroopers. The first units into Kuwait kicking off Desert Shield/Desert Storm were from the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. Somalia.. Marines were the first in there, and they were the first major ground unit into Afghanistan (although, in reality, the CIA's Special Activities Division were probably there before anyone). Iraq... Army Special Forces were in-country well before it kicked it (presumably, CIA and special ops from other branches would have been, as well). The ground offensive kicked off with both forces moving concurrently (as well as other Coalition nations), and it was the Air Force which actually carried out the first strike in OIF. So.... I'm not 100% certain where this question is coming from. As for who responds to crisis and hot spots in the world first, a lot of will be dependent upon which units are available, most conveniently located, and in possession of the assets required for the mission. If it should be a Marine unit, they'll be called on. If it should be an Army unit, then they'll be called on.

Who goes first into a war marines or army?

If it's a shore based enemy...the Marines are sent in. If it's a 100% land battle far from the ocean...then it's the army's jurisdiction. Un-officially...the Marines have had a tougher duty by the very nature of securing hostile beach-heads. Consequently, their training (used to be) legendary for toughness. Translation: US Marines "used" to be the equivalent of "shock troops" in the US military...the toughest US fighting men alive.

What military unit went to Iraq first?

It was RCT-5 (Regimental Combat Team) which was the 5th Marines and support elements. On the 20th of March at 1730 Zulu time (9 and ½ hours BEFORE Saddam's deadline for surrender) we crossed the line of departure and headed to secure the Southern GOSP (Gas Oil Separation Plants) of Rumaylah. Also to engage and prevent the reinforcement of the 51st Mechanized Division.
