The causes of World War 2 are complex. Factors included but are not limited to: food shortages, embargos, several disease outbreaks, lack of medical supplies, inflation, and high unemployment. More often then not war is an excercise in economics then any other cause.

The main factors for Germany's involvement was the treaty after World War 1 had such a damaging impact on the German population that it created an environment in which the Nazi party was able to gain control. Adolph Hitler mearly capitalized on those issues as well as existing fears, prejiduces, mythology, and poor economic opportunities. It was the lessons learned from World War 2 that nation building became crucial to sustaining what peace there was in the late 20th century. High poverty, poor economic opportunities, are breeding grounds for dictatorships. It is likely that even in the absence of the Nazi party that Germany may have pursued war as an option, economically they didn't have much to lose.

Japan's involvement is a bit more difficult to gauge, in the absence of the Nazi's but with land issues and conflicts with China, they may or may not have pursued war.

Italy under Mussolini may have ventured into war sans Germany but these are all very big "what ifs" and more then likely will be fiercely debated for centuries to come.

It would be more historically accurate to say that Germany's invasion of Poland started World War 2, historically it wouldn't have mattered much who was in charge and Germany's situation at the time would beg the question, "If it wasn't Hitler it would have been somone else."

___

Much of the above sounds more like popular descriptions of tensions in the decade or so before World War 1 than World War 2. The view that the fundamental problems were economic is dogmatic.

Until 1939 there was little feeling in Europe that the continent was seething with rivalries.

The above presupposes that war between Germany and Poland was inevitable. This was not the case, and in fact the two countries had cultivated good relations between 1934 and 1939 and even had a pact. This really needs mentioning.

Yes. After the Anschluss (annexation of Austria) and the appeasement that the Allies offered Hitler (the Sudentenland in what is now the Czech Republic), Hitler felt that he could just take whatever he wanted. In 1938, he moved east into Poland with his Blitzkrieg, and Britain and France declared war on Germany.

Under his direction, Germany invaded Poland on 1 Sept 1939----the main event and date established as the beginning of WW2 in Europe.

The war in the Pacific probably would have happened even without Hitler in power. Most likely, WWII in Europe would not have happened without Hitlers' leadership.

No. The reasons for the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 are completely unrelated to the Holocaust, which had not started at that time anyway.
