As a result of the Spanish-American War, the US stripped Spain of its last possessions in Latin America, as well as in the Pacific. This left the US in the unique position of being the only imperial power in the Western Hemisphere, though it had already been claiming dozens of Pacific islands throughout the 19th century, including Hawaii.

Hastening is perhaps not the right word. When you consider how the U.S. absorbed the territory of Indian nations across the North American continent you come to realize that an informal Imperialism was operating for a long time. What the Spanish American War resulted in was a formal imperialism more like that practiced by the European nations. The Philippines became a long distance dependent of the U.S. However, if anything, this resulted in the U.S. wishing to get out of the formal imperialism business rather than increase its imperial holdings. As it turned out the imperial responsibilities and issues that the Philippines created were not what the U.S. wanted. Within a decade moves were made to grant the Philippines more self rule. Even without World War II the U.S. was looking to relieve itself of most imperial responsibility.

Both the US and Spain were fighting for dominance of the American continent. They each wanted the other one out of this part of the world (and the US succeeded in helping Central and South American countries to kick out Spain, and become independent).

No, because it was to help Cuba get their independence not for their imperialism.

How did the attack on Pearl Harbor relate to the Spanish American war?

It didn't. The Spanish American War was almost half a century before World War II and had nothing whatsoever to do with Hawaii. Michael Montagne In the recent book "Flyboys" (highly recommended) the author makes some interesting connections between European/Western imperialism and the Japanese imperialism that led up to World War II and the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the Spanish-American War the US kicked the imperialist Spanish out of the Americas, but in some ways, replaced it with an American brand of imperialism. The Japanese believed they were exercising the same sort of power over their own backyard in Asia.

The Spanish-American War was due to explosion of the US warship, the USS Maine that was docked in Havana, Cuba. Over 200 US sailors lost their lives. The US press and others blamed Spain for this act of war. Based on the destruction of the USS Maine, the Spanish-American War began as the US declared war on Spain.
