Slaves in the South were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Slaves in the North by the 13th Amendment.

joh9356 --- Not true, not a single slave was "freed" by the Emancipation Proclamation. Since the Confederate States of America was a separate entity officially, the U.S. had no jurisdiction over it's territory. The fact that the confederacy was reabsorbed back into the U.S. is a moot point. It was still a viable government that enacted laws and its own Constitution, and was invaded and destroyed.

The U.S. had no more right to enforce laws in the CSA than we do today in say, Russia or Japan.
