What fell was the western part of the Roman empire, the eastern part of the Roman Empire continued to exist for another 1,000 years. Byzantine Empire is a term coined by historians to indicate the Eastern Roman Empire after the fall of the western part of the empire.

One of the emperors of the east, Justinian I, decided to "reunite" the empire by recovering the lands lost in the western part of the empire through the Germanic invasion. He succeeded in retaking Italy, North Africa and part of Spain. However, these lands were then lost again.
