The Bosporus, and the location of the Byzantine Empire's capital city Byzantium, is located on the far western end of the trading route known as the Silk Road. The Silk Road was a trade route that had been used for centuries that transported goods from East Asia to the Mediterranean. At this time, many Eastern Asian materials were greatly wanted in Europe, making Byzantium a key trading post between Asia and the Middle East and Europe. It allowed them to make a lot of money as middle men in the giant trade scheme. Soon, though, with explorers making their way around the southern cape of Africa and into the Indian ocean, countries in Europe wanted to find a way to get around the middle men in the Silk Road trade in order to set trade directly up with such places as India.
