Under this act you cannot own a gun if you come under these conditions:
- If you have previously been sentanced for imprisonment for at least a year by the Federal Court (business related crimes excepted)
- If you have previously been sentanced for imprisonment for at least two years by a State Court (again, business related crimes excepted)
- If you are a fugitive
- If you have a known drugs addiction
- If you have a known mental illness
- If you are an illegal immigrant. Legal immigrants can own guns if they have a valid hunting licence.
- If you have been dismissed from the army under "dishonourable conditions"
- If you have renounced your citizenship
In 1996, two more restrictions were added:
- If you have a court order as the result of intimidating (e.g. harassment, stalking)
- If you have been convicted for domestic violence

My opinion is that gun control laws are based on a flawed belief that a person who will break laws regarding murder, robbery and rape will obey another law that says they may not have a gun. There are already about 20,000 Federal, State, and local gun laws on the books in the US. Gun control laws frequently do little except keep law abiding people from being able to defend themselves.
