Free Countries that bordered Communist Countries were normally hot spots. Communist North and Free South Korea; Communist North and Free South Vietnam; However Communist East Germany which bordered Free West Germany, was the "Hot Spot" favored by the United States to fight a war at. All of the war material manufactured during the COLD WAR was built to fight at that location; at the famous "Fulda Gap" taught at all US Army war schools during the cold war. The US Army and US Air Force which had the new Patton series medium tanks (later classified as MBT's-Main Battle Tanks) and the US Air Force's new jets such as the F-100 Supersabres, F-101 Voodoos, F-102 Delta Daggers (President Bush's Jet), F-104 Starfighters, F-105 Thunderchiefs, B-52 Stratofortress Bombers, SR-71 Blackbirds, U-2 Spyplanes, ALL WANTED TO FIGHT IN EUROPE (At the FULDA GAP). And ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT TO FIGHT IN ASIA (Korea & Vietnam)! The US Navy & US Marine Corps (Part of the US Navy) didn't mind fighting in Asia, they usually fight in that region anyway (they're used to it). But the US Army & US Air Force have traditionally (mostly) fought in Europe and wanted to keep it that way. So naturally, where did all of that NEW MILITARY HARDWARE get used? It wasn't at the "Fulda Gap"! Every single piece of "built to fight in Europe" military hardware (minus Nukes) was worn out fighting in Vietnam. Here's one example: The USAF F-105 Thunderchief was the only single engine USAF jet fighter bomber designed to carry a nuclear weapon inside it's fuselage (body) and it was the largest single engine jet in the USAF inventory. In Vietnam, that nuclear weapon storage space was used to carry extra conventional high explosive bombs. Consequently the F-105 Thunderchief had a reputation for having a heavy pay-load of bombs, therefore it was used extensively in bombing missions over North Vietnam; which naturally caused a HIGH LOSS RATE of F-105 Thunderchiefs during the war. Nearly 400 Thunderchiefs were lost in the Vietnam War. The United States only built 833 of them! When 50% of any fighting force is lost, that element is considered no longer "combat effective" and is normally withdrawn from the front lines. Losses of F-105's was so high, they were withdrawn from the combat zone and replaced by the F-4 Phantom, of which over 6,000 were built.

Some deserts are hot, some are cold, depending upon the geographic location. Some cold deserts can be quite hot during the summer but are bitterly cold during the winter (Gobi Desert, Great Basin Desert). Some deserts are cold all year long (Antarctic Desert). Some are quite cool all year long because they are locate on the coast near cold ocean currents (Atacama and Namb Deserts). Some deserts are hot in the summer but have mild winters (Sahara and Mojave Deserts). Geography determines the climate of a desert.
