Both Japan and Taiwan are modern, industrialized East Asian countries. Additionally, since Taiwan was a Japanese colony from 1895-1945, Taiwan has an urban planning and development that is much more similar to Japan than most places in China. The two countries also have a strong Western Orientation and trepidation towards Chinese expansionism. Additionally, unlike Mainland China, Taiwan still uses Traditional Hanzi, meaning that most Taiwanese and Japanese can sort-of understand each other's writings.
