What are the benefits of computers in education?

Many many ways! Here are just some ways I have used them in the past - I am a high school Mathematics teacher.

1) Learning aide for students who have motor skills issues and cannot write clearly.

2) Combine with interactive websites, flash and java applets to reinforce or even teach a concept.

3) As a research and presentation tool both for students and teachers. Students can create a traditional presentation, construct a blog, research using social media and many other things - teacher can too!

4) Record keeping and manipulation of worksheets, results, exams, analysis of results.

5) Construct worksheets, exams and program/curriculum documents.

6) Communication tool - network with other teachers or schools.

7) Some schools I have been in have interactive whiteboards - useful for exploring a concept and having students manipulate diagrams in order to understand concept or dispel misconceptions.

8) Some schools also have a video conferencing suite - allows geographically isolated students to access resources and people they wouldn't normally be able to.

9) View online videos. As a teacher this is a great way to start a discussion, or to get a concept across. Kids today don't want to listen to a 'boring' teacher tell them about something - they wan't to see it and interact with it. I also find that viewing online videos is a great way to source new/different teaching ideas.

With the advances in technology these days, everything we do is digitized and computerized. The majority of schools (approximately 99.99% of them), have their students do research papers and the best source of research is the internet, which is only accessable through a computer (according to school policies; you can access the Internet through a cell phone, but keep in mind, schools ban the use of cell phones during class hours (except for colleges, granted that they frown upon the use of a phone, they do not ban its use entirely). Also, most teachers at these schools require essays and such to be "typed" out and saved to a flash drive or other data storage device (they do this because someone can just get a typewriter and say that they did it from a computer when in fact, they did not), and the only way to do this is through the use of a computer with a word processor (like Microsoft Word, Notepad, or WordPad).

Answer Having a computer or at least access to one is crucial these days even when in high school. Teachers are assigning homework that requires students to run simulations, use other computer programs or research topics. Not to mention the many essays students have to right. If a family doesn't have the money to buy a computer or pay for internet access I suggest their child stay after school if possible and use the school's computer laboratory. The problem with this is the student will probably miss getting on the bus to be driven home. This causes big logistical problems for the parents.

Another option is to make reservations at your local library to use the computer. The problem in highly populated areas it sometimes is difficult to reserve time and the allotted time is usually only one hour per reservation. Even the most rushed five paragraph essay takes longer to write than an hour.

There is one option for parents looking to buy a computer. I recommend buying a used laptop that is only a few years old. Just make sure the computer has a wireless adapter. This way your child can access the internet without using a cord. Many restaurants like Starbucks offer free wireless internet access. Your child could go there when they need to research a topic. Save the webpages to their computer and then when they get home write the essay or make the PowerPoint at home without internet access. Assuming your child has the necessary programs to do so installed already.
