Ancient Roman culture evolved over the period of Rome's founding in 753 BC/BE to the end of the Western half of the empire that fell in 476 AD/CE. Over these long years however, certain cultural aspects of ancient Rome were in place for much of the time Rome was a viable civilization. These are some of them:

A. Pride in being a Roman citizen and enjoying the rights citizenship provided to its citizens.

B. The cultural wisdom of allowing conquered peoples to become Roman citizens.

C. Respect for the pagan gods, their temples and rituals surrounding them.

D. Tolerance of other religions.

E. A cultural acceptance of using the Roman military in expanding and preserving the Republic & the Empire.

F. The cultural understanding that men, whether as heads of families or public leaders, was never in doubt.

G. Despite the evolution to an Emperor system of government, the hatred of "kings" as leaders of Rome was universal

H. The willingness to join Rome's military forces.

I. The cultural acceptance of slavery.

J. The acceptance of bloody forms of entertainment such as gladiator fights.

These ten aspects of ancient Roman culture held firm during most of the time that Rome was a viable civilization.

This question is an opportunity to outline some of the most important things to know about ancient Rome. The ancient Roman civilization spanned a very large amount of time and there were frequent changes within its civilization. Here are some basic and important things to know about ancient Rome. The list is limited due to space, and please understand that the areas covered are put in broad terms. However, here are items of importance:

A. Ancient Rome became the most sophisticated civilization in its time;

B. Ancient Rome rose from a small city-state to become the major power in much of what now is Europe, Northern Africa, and in areas of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.;

C. Ancient Rome, remained a world empire despite the fact that there were innumerable civil wars that killed many of its own soldiers. Few empires could retain its world power with so much internal turmoil as Rome did;

D. Unlike many other ancient civilizations, Rome awarded citizenship to many of the peoples it conquered;

E. For many centuries, the Roman legion, became a sophisticated "war machine" that was a highly successful one;

F. Roman engineers accomplished major construction projects that were well ahead of other ancient civilizations;

Fa. This included an excellent network of superior roads and bridges;

Fb. They built an aqueduct system that in Rome and elsewhere in the empire was able to provide fresh clean water to its people;

Fc. Unlike other ancient civilizations, Rome built a sewerage system that a large city like Rome would need to have a sanitary water system;

Fd. Rome's massive construction projects such as the Colosseum were feats of masterful ingenuity;

G. Ancient Rome had radically different forms of government over its life span and survived them, often other civilzations would crumble at the changes from a monarchy, republic and emperor system;

H. Ancient Rome brought forth written laws and in its time the efforts to bring fair and representitive government, flawed as it was, was better than previous ancient empires.

The culture of ancient Rome was Roman culture. The Roman Empire included the many cultures of the conquered peoples: various Italic cultures, Greek, Thracian, Illyrian, Syriac. Phoenician, Jewish, Egyptian, Berber, Hiberian, Celtic, etc.
