One of the differences between World war one and the American civil war was in terms of technology. The weapons used in World War One were more technologically advanced than the weapons used in the American Civil War. For example, the World War One was fought with machine guns, poison gas, tanks, planes and barbed wire, although barbed wire was not new it was still the first time it was used in a war, while the American Civil War was fought with rifles and bayonets. Another difference is the reason behind the war. World War One was fought because the next in line for Austria-Hungary's throne was killed and the allies of Austria-Hungary and Serbia all helped out so a small war turned into a World War. The American Civil War was very different, it was fought over the rights to have slaves.

The US Civil War in 1861 was an armed conflict within the US. Eleven Southern slave states declared their independence from the US also called the Union. These rebellious states formed a de facto nation called the Confederate States of America. The term d facto in this case applies in that the Confederacy had a standing government, a constitution and an armed fighting force. That war ended in four years in April of 1865. World War One was a much larger war that involved mostly European nations. It began in 1914 and ended 1918. The US entered the war in 1917 because of unrestricted German submarine warfare.

These two wars were 53 years apart using their ending dates.

From the end of the US Civil War, to the beginning of World War One, weapons technology had advanced greatly. For example, the invention of the airplane, was a radical advance. This war also included armored fighting vehicles such as the tank, and improved firearms for the military forces. Also, for all practical purposes, warships and submarines played a much larger role in World War One then in the US Civil War.

There are many differences between the US Civil War and World War One. Here are the major ones:

1. The US Civil War was due to eleven states of the US seeking to form an independent nation, the Confederate States of America. World War One was a conflict between several world powers, mostly European nations and the USA. There is no major connection to either war on this basis except that the government of the US was involved with each of them;

2. The weapons of the US Civil War were modern weapons for their time in the middle of the 19th century. World War One weapons were technologically advanced. This war had weapons such as warplanes, armored tanks, sophisticated machine guns, gas weapons, large submarine fleets and huge battle ships on a scale that far surpassed the warships in the US Civil War;

3. The number of troops involved in World War One were literally millions more than the three million soldiers in the US Civil War;

4. The number of casualties in World War One were over ten times those of the US Civil War;

5. The US Civil War was fought in less than five years. Hostilities began in 1861 and ended in 1865. World War One began in 1914 and ended in 1918. The years of difference is significant in that many more casualties were caused by the latter war's length and the large number of nations involved;

6. Slavery was abolished in the US at the end of the US Civil War. Slavery was not an issue in World War One;

7. World War One ended and a far reaching treaty was agreed to by the major powers in the war. This treaty, the Treaty of Versailles enacted harsh penalties against Germany. Germany lost territory and overseas colonies. There was no treaty that ended the US Civil War. The US government never recognized the rebel states as a nation, although it in fact was a defacto nation having a government, a constitution and a formal army and navy;and

8. On a whole, there is no true comparison between the two wars in that the huge scale of World War One deemed it to be the War to End all Wars. This type of designation indicates the clear reason there are no comparisons that logically can be made. In fact the question to be asked is why was the US Civil War incomparable to World War One.
