The EGR valve controls the recycling of exaust gasses back into the intake in order to regulate NOx emmisions. Since this is a vacuum type device, a leak could effect many other systems. It is tied to the PCM (powertrain control module) so a problem could concievably cause a lot of strange problems, including with your transmission. But any malfunction would most certainly generate an error code, if not a multitude of them.
