General Knowledge
A "hemisphere" is simply half of a globe, or half of the Earth's surface. Although any half of the Earth's surface can be a hemisphere, for convenient reference there is a general consensus that the Earth is divided into four geographical hemispheres.
The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The Earth is also divided into the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. Technically, the meridians of longitude that run along zero and 180 degrees constitute that dividing line.
This technical division presents a political problem. The division of hemispheres by the meridian at 180 degrees can be easily adjusted to being the International Date Line. The meridian at zero degrees, however, divides Europe artificially. Therefore, the strict east-west technical definitions have given way to a more relaxed political interpretation.
The Western Hemisphere is now loosely defined as being the area containing the Americas. Likewise, the Eastern Hemisphere is also loosely defined as being the area containing Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
A similar political division between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres has not yet developed clearly.
For a considerable period of time, the political issue of whether Greenland was part of the Eastern or Western Hemisphere had been a matter of some controversy. It has now been firmly established by the USA's Central Intelligence Agency that Greenland is in the Western Hemisphere.
