Africa is not a country, it is a continent. Africa itself consists of some of the richest nations (mostly located in the northern portion of the continent). The poor African nations are mostly located in Subsaharan Africa. This portion of Africa had been isolated from civilization for centuries, as the Sahara Desert acts as an impediment to travel. The first true contact to civilization is when the Europeans arrived. They conquered the continent and established colonies. They stopped Africa from becoming industrialized themselves, and this is the reason for the poorness. Industrialization and business = money, which Subsaharan Africa had/has little of. Just now are these countries growing in industry and business, and are earning huge sums of money. Another reason is that this is the location for the most corrupted nations. These countries' governments keep the money to themselves and give little to their own people; this is why there is huge poverty, death rates, etc. in these nations as well.
