The head of state of Canada is Queen Elizabeth II, who is federally represented by the Governor General of Canada (currently David Johnston). The Governor General:

  • celebrates and encourages excellence,
  • summons and dismisses Parliament,
  • signs legislation into law,
  • makes federal appointments,
  • issues and receives diplomatic credentials,
  • performs state visits,
  • commands Canada's armed forces, and
  • exercises executive authority on behalf of the Queen.

Canada's head of government is the Prime Minister, the chairman of the federal Cabinet. The Cabinet politically advises the apolitical Governor General on the performance of his or her duties. The current Prime Minister of Canada is Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
