The Mexican-American war was largely a partisan issue. Democrats were generally for it, while Whigs opposed it. Polk, a proponent of manifest destiny, desired land expansion and thus supported the war. War with Mexico offered the chance to acquire much of the West, including Texas and California. Opponents of the war often called it "Mr. Polk's War."

There was a large amount of opposition to the war from the Whigs. They felt it was an unjust war and was stealing of Mexico's land. Abolitionists also felt it was an attempt to expand slavery into the West.

They used the Texas border dispute to create a war scenario that would facilitate the purchase. By winning that war they gained Manifest Destiny at a bargain basement price.
