Meditation is used to both relax the physical body and to enhance and accelerate spiritual growth and enlightenment. People who practice meditation on a regular basis look and feel younger, more alert, more creative, and better able to handle the stresses of the day. Meditation that relieves stress will show up on your face as it helps give that peaceful look that can take 5 to 15 years off your actual age. Meditation is also invaluable as a tool for self-healing. Giving your body as little as 5-10 minutes of quiet or shall we say "down time" a day can help boost the immune system and keep your body healthy. An improved immune system can help keep you from getting the common cold. Ever connect the fact that when you are feeling overwhelmed that seems to be the time that you get a cold or flu bug? Then you are forced to regroup and rest. Meditation may actually help keep you from continually "coming down with something"

There are several different kinds of meditation used in Buddhism or rather the word meditation is a translation of different Sanskrit terms. These different meditations have different purposes.

Buddhist meditation can be divided into 1. shamatha or "calm abiding" and 2. vipashyana or "clear seeing".

1. The practice of shamatha is used to make the mind flexible. That means through shamatha you can direct your mind as you wish without being distracted by outer phenomena.

2. Vipashyana builds on that leads to insight into the nature of phenomena.

Meditation can also be divided into 1. analytical meditation and 2. resting meditation.

1. In analytical meditation you investigate or analyse while being in shamatha meditation. This will lead to insight (or vipashyana).

2. Resting meditation is alternated with analytical meditation and in this you simply let the mind rest in the conclusions reached through analysis.

The Dalai Lama speaks of two different approaches of meditation:

1. Meditations on topics like compassion and loving kindness have the purpose of cultivating a certain state of mind.

2. Meditations on topics like impermanence have the purpose of getting familiar with a topic.

Meditation helps strengthen awareness. Meditation helps us to see that we are not the mind, not the emotions, not the body. Meditation brings a sense of calm. Meditation helps us to see that fulfilling the desires of the mind will not bring a lasting sense of contentment.

And all of these things change the way we act in our everyday lives. When a business deal falls through, we do not take it as hard. When someone cuts us off on the highway, we laugh instead of yell. When we have an hour between appointments, we stop and breathe into our bellies and enjoy simply being, rather than playing Video Games.

The uses to which it is put can affect the results, but meditation is neither good nor bad -- it simply is.Try googling "meditation" and reading some of the material. That will not only acquaint you with a useful bit of knowledge, it will also supply you with sources. You will learn nothing if I do your homework for you.

Who most likely uses meditation?

Meditation is a very widely used system in both spiritual and secular contexts. In my own personal experience Buddhists seem to have a greater capacity for meditation than some other spiritual and secular paths. A moderately committed Buddhist might accumulate 5,000 hours of meditation over a ten year period. I don't know of other contexts (although they may exist) where there is such a widespread and strong commitment to regular meditation.

There are a number of differnt meditation methods. the focus of most of these methods is to focus single pointed concetration on one thing, such as your breath, so listening to music at the same time would be counter-productive.
