The 1993 constitution declares Russia a democratic, federative, law-based state with a republican form of government. State power is divided among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
During the past century, Russia had gone from (1) an old and absolute monarchy to (2) a short-lived provisional government to (3) a communist Dictatorship and then finally to (4) a democracy.
For a short synopsis of these transitions, keep reading.
(1) From the beginning of the twentieth century up until 1917, the Russian Empire had been led by Tsar Nicolas II. However, with the increasingly frequent famines, governmental corruption, and unsuccessful battles, the masses soon revolted.
(2) At the end of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the monarchy was replaced by a provisional government, whose rule spanned until 1922, and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed to end involvement in the First World War. During these years, the area became known as the Russian Republic and underwent a period of civil war between the Whites (anti-communists) and the Reds (communists).
(3) After the Russian Civil War was eventually won by the Reds in 1922, the USSR was set up. The Russian Republic was then renamed the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Russian SFSR). A few familiar names such as Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, and Gorbachev pop up during this era, as the area transforms into a totalitarian state and then gradually transitions into a democracy.
(4) Although it wasn't until the Christmas of 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved, Russia had its first ever presidential election in June, 1991, the winner of which having been Boris Yeltsin. This signified a terrific step in the nation's transition to democracy, as wide-ranging reforms were also made. And, by the time the USSR was dissolved, Russia became known as simply the Russian Federation.
This, in a nutshell, summarizes Russia's governmental transitions within the twentieth century.
