Fennel seed, or star anise, but you need to grind the star anise. You want something that tastes like licorice. The Star Anise is kind of expensive, it comes like 12 in a bottle, for six dollars; they look like stars. There are also liqueurs that taste like licorice, such as Pernod.

Fennel seed, or star anise. Star anise is kind of expensive, you get like a dozen more or less stars in a bottle. Fennel seed has that licorice flavor as well.

Ground anise has a sweet, licorice flavor that is used often in Jamaican cooking. However, a mixture of cinnamon and cloves can be substituted for anise if necessary.
