It is out of time. You can bend a valve when it backfires through the intake so careful till you find cause. Perhaps belt or chain has jumped a tooth. Go to www.autozone.com and click on repair info and enter vehicle and click on repair manual and a manual for your car will come up and its free to use. Also autozone rents a compression tester for free(get money back when return it). Easy to check compression each cylinder so I would start there. Hope this helps
you did't specify if it is carburetor or fuel injection.if the backfire is out the exhaust or through the intake. if out the exaust it is usually ignition and if it is through the intake/carb or the plenum/fuel injected it usually is a lean or fuel starvation...
The plenum is what the air flows through going into the engine. Instake manifold is another name for it.
AnswerBad spark plug wiresActually I doubt that it's the plug wires. I had the same problem, as have many Ram owners. For some reason Dodge decided to put a steel plenum cover on the bottom of the intake plenum, the problem is that the aluminum plenum and the steel expand at different rates and the gasket get's destroyed in the process. It's really easy to check this. Pull the line to your PC valve if you have a ton of suction at an Idle then this is your problem. Another indication is if your idle speed is up around 1000rpm or you get black smoke when accelerating. It's a cheap part to buy but quite a chore to get to as you have to remove the plenum and everything in the way of it.
The intake plenum on most cars is bolted directly atop the intake manifold. This is where the air goes after passing through the throttle body.
A plenum chamber is a chamber that operates at a positive pressure and is filled with fluid or air. It is used to increase air flow in enclosed spaces. The positive pressure draws air from the space into channels, which causes air movement.
Starter is located underneath plenum.
The plenum is the intake manifold.
Its an air collecting box. And it is used for clubbing two units together or reducing the sound level of air flow Eng'r. Mostafa Al Wakeel Plenum boxes are often the most effective way of connecting terminals to ducting, and with the superb range available from HVC, why not find out more about our plenum boxes? Plenum boxes provide the connection between grilles and diffusers, and the appropriate ductwork either extracting or supplying air. Essentially plenum boxes are just as important as both the grille and ducting. Fixing lugs for fitting into a drop rod ceiling can be factory fitted, and normally the plenum will be fixed by an appropriate method to the grille or diffuser neck. plenum chamber An enclosed space in which a plenum condition exists; air is forced into it for slow distribution through ducts.
Answer 1There probably could be several causes. The two most commonly occurring of which I can recall are a defective heate core [a small radiator inside the heat and A/C plenum box] which allows engine/radiator coolant to leak into the plenum, and the second would be some foreign object [like a candy wrapper or piece of a plastic bag] being sucked into the plenum through the return grate, and then being caught on the blower speed control resistor[s] pack.

Plenum is another name for the upper intake manifold.
Assuming it's the V6, there are 3 in the front and 3 in the back under the plenum. the 3 in the front are really easy to get to. a good walk through on removing the plenum is here: http://home.pacbell.net/fong8/gstuff/tjc_plenum.htm
