You are completing the electrical circut, causing the electricity to jump through the air to the battery to complete the circut as quickly as possible.

Something is on pulling power. Can be just the clock & ECU if the spark is very small. Or can be some lights if the spark is large.

Why dead battery in morning 1987 El Camino?

you possibly have something draining the battery when the car is shut off, with the car shut off pull the positive cable off the battery and then just touch the cable to the positive post of the battery and see if you get a spark, if you get a spark you have something electrical draining the battery.

Why does your battery teminal spark when you connect the red jumper cable?

Something is on drawing power from the battery. Always connect the positive cable first and the negative cable last.

Why does your car battery spark when you attach the negative cable after you attached the positive first?

What could be draining the battery on a 1970 firebird?

It could be lights on in the trunk or a short someplace, your best bet would be to touch positive cable to the battery and if you get a spark something is drawing power from the battery, pull one fuse at a time and recheck the spark at the battery and when you have a fuse pulled and it finally doesn't spark when you touch the positive cable to the battery terminal you have found the circuit that your problem is in.

Why would the Positive battery cable spark when starting?

Poor connection. remove and clean the connector and post and retighten

Which battery cable should be reconnected first?

Positive should always be connected first. The pull of electrons toward the positive terminal will cause a spark.

How do you use jump leads?

Also known as jumper cables? Attach the RED cable to the positive post of the good battery, then positive post of dead battery. BLACK cable to negative post of good battery, then to SOLID METAL on engine away from dead battery. Start car with good battery, then car with bad battery. Remove in the reverse order, and do not let the ends touch each other. When making last connection, there will be a spark. If that spark is at a battery, it can make the battery explode- car batteries give off hydrogen gas. Procedure above keeps spark away from battery.

When you charge a battery do you connect positive or negative first?

The man said it Always connect the positive + cable first to the battery. Then connect the negative- cable to the engine somewhere. Never connect the negative cable to the battery itself. Batteries vent hydrogen gas and which can ignite with the slightest spark. For this reason never, ever, connect the negative first and never connect the negative to the battery.

Why should a car battery's positive terminal be connected first for charging?

Batteries vent Hydrogen gas. You should always connect the positive battery cable first to avoid a spark at the battery that could cause the Hydrogen to explode. The negative cable should never be connected to the battery negative post. It should be connected to another ground area on the engine.

How to replace spark plugs on Grand Vitara 2000?

Should a battery spark if you put the positive terminal before the negative?

You should see no spark if you connect only one cable. You will see a slight spark when you connect the other cable but it should be so minor as to hardly be noticeable. The radio & clock draw power all the time but is in mili-volts. If you see a large spark then something is on drawing power. Connect positive first and negative last.
