connect the positive first, the negative. the negative cable doesnt spark as much

Typically, you just disconnect it, unbolt any retaining bolts, and pull it out. Always disconnect the negative cable first when removing a battery and reconnect the negative cable last when installing a battery. The pertains to a negative ground system only.
Most Ford trucks are the same. First thing you do, is disconnect the battery cables. Then get underneath the truck, disconnect the negative cable from the starter. Remove the 2 bolts holding the starter. Remove, and replace the starter, and reconnect the negative cable to the starter, then reconnect your battery.
Disconnect the positive battery cable and charge it with a slow charger. Clean and reconnect the cable once the battery is fully charged.
